Esalen opens May 3, 2024

Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.

Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Daniel Gloyd

Daniel Gloyd is a designer and research expert specializing in the fields of human-computer interaction and user experience design. He has helped organizations such as Toyota, Samsung, Ford, TIAA, and McDonald's embrace human-centered design for over 25 years. 

Gloyd is a thought leader in his field and has focused his work on humanizing the technology-driven worlds we increasingly inhabit. He is dedicated to developing and sharing principles of warmth with anyone “building worlds” — from social services to online education — in order to prioritize the interconnectedness we humans need in order to thrive. 

After earning a master's degree from the pioneering design program at Carnegie Mellon University, Daniel went on to found the User Interface team at Samsung’s Los Angeles Design Lab. He left the LA Lab to become a partner and founding VP of Research at Gist Design, acquired by TrueFit Innovation in 2014. 

Gloyd’s has written two forthcoming books: one about designing warmth, another about Shaker Design. He is the author of a published white paper, “Positive User Experience and Medical Adherence,” and is the inventor of five US design patents. 

In addition to his professional design and research consulting, he actively explores experimental and conceptual design.
