Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.
Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.
Janne Larsen is a multidisciplinary artist and maker based in Los Angeles whose work explores the intersection of art, sustainability, and regional identity. Rooted in a deep appreciation for the natural world, Janne specializes in creating regionally inspired inks and natural wines, each designed to reflect the unique character of the plants, landscapes, and communities of her local environment.
Janne’s passion for making inks stems from her fascination with the stories that colors can tell about a place. She collects plants, minerals, and other natural materials from the Los Angeles area to create a four-color ink palette that captures the history, culture, and vibrancy of her region. This process reflects her belief in the reciprocal relationship between humans and the natural world: plants thrive when they have a relationship with people, and in turn, people are enriched by their connection to the land.
In addition to her work as an ink maker, Janne creates natural wines using fruit harvested from local neighborhoods. Influenced by childhood memories of her mother’s winemaking, she seeks to create wines that embody the terroir of Los Angeles. Her approach is personal and community-focused, blending artistry and sustainability to craft wines that tell a story of place, flavor, and culture. Through her work, Janne celebrates the power of art and nature to foster connection and storytelling.
