Esalen opens May 3, 2024

Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.

Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Kenneth Cohen

Ken Cohen, M.A., is a world-renowned qigong and tai chi grandmaster. He has been practicing Chinese healing, martial, and contemplative arts since 1968. Ken’s teachers have included such luminaries as Grandmasters William C. C. Chen, B. P. Chan, and Madame Gao Fu. He was also the only lifetime apprentice of Dr. Huang Gengshi (1910-1999), acupuncturist and Taoist Abbot from the Chinese holy mountain, Xi Qiao Shan.

A former collaborator with Alan Watts, Ken is the author of The Way of Qigong and more than 200 journal articles on spirituality and health. In 2003, he was the recipient of the Alyce and Elmer Green Lifetime Achievement Award in Energy Medicine. Ken’s lectures and seminars have been sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the Mayo Clinic, Health Canada, and numerous universities. A dynamic and inspiring teacher, he makes ancient healing arts easy to learn and a joy to practice.
