Esalen opens May 3, 2024

Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.

Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Mukund Subramanian

Mukund Subramanian began a 12-year training in 1993 with a renowned healer, Ōmuro Toyo, in Aomori, Japan, in a distinct Garlic Moxibustion (Ninniku Okyū) technique in the traditional apprenticeship system. Over the years, he has developed a distinct healing practice called Intuitive Healing which enhances the Ninniku Okyū practice. Mukund comes from a family of Carnatic musicians in Chennai, India, whose belief in the power of devotion, resonance, and healing greatly inspires his teachings.

Mukund holds a PhD in cultural anthropology from Stanford University where he received the Robert Beyer Textor Award for his work on the power of subtle emotional spaces and psychosomatic states created through the seer/healer and client/community. Mukund has been a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University and is completing a manuscript on emotion, intuition, and the art of healing, which is an exploration of our individual and collective journey to creatively heal and nurture healthy selves in the current global world.

Born into a family of Carnatic musicians in India, Mukund Subramanian offers powerful meditations, rituals, and creative guidance to inspire healing. He holds a PhD in cultural anthropology and developed his Intuitive Healing approach following a 12-year apprenticeship with a traditional healer in northeastern Japan.
