Due to road closures along Highway 1 to our north and south, Esalen is closed through April 11.
Esalen Institute is open! However, Highway 1 to the south is closed — please review the current travel advisory.

Esalen opens May 3, 2024

Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.

Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Nancy Lunney-Wheeler

Nancy Lunney Wheeler, MA, MFT, is known for developing Singing Gestalt, an innovative integration of Gestalt Practice, voice, and embodied expression. Drawing from her background in musical theatre, psychotherapy, and Systemic Constellations, she has taught internationally and at Esalen Institute for decades. Formerly a vocal coach and accompanist, she worked with established actors and performers in New York and Los Angeles. She served as Esalen’s Director of Programs for 30 years, overseeing thousands of workshops and teachers, and now serves on Esalen’s Board of Trustees. She lives and practices in Santa Cruz.

Nancy Lunney-Wheeler, MA, MFT, is noted for her work combining Gestalt with music and singing. For 30 years, Nancy served as director of programs for Esalen Institute, where she now serves as senior advisor and is a longtime member of the Board of Esalen.
