Esalen opens May 3, 2024

Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.

Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Roger Kuhn

Dr. Roger Kuhn is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), certified sex therapist (CST), and educator with a profound commitment to embodiment and liberation practices. With over 20 years of experience, Roger has dedicated his career to exploring the intersection of culture, embodiment, and personal and collective freedom.

Roger holds a PhD in human sexuality with a concentration in clinical practice, a master’s degree in counseling psychology with an emphasis on somatic psychotherapy, a bachelor’s degree in anthropology, and an associate’s degree in occupation studies and massage therapy. Dr. Kuhn has extensive training in somatic therapy modalities that integrate body awareness with psychological healing and social justice principles. He is passionate about empowering individuals to reconnect with their bodies as a path toward personal healing and collective liberation. His workshops are known for their depth, inclusivity, and practical application, offering participants tools to embody their values and create meaningful change in their lives and communities.

His work centers on helping individuals and communities understand how cultural contexts shape their relationship with their bodies and identities.

As a seasoned workshop facilitator and speaker, Roger has led numerous transformative sessions focusing on somatic awareness, liberation practices, and their applications in therapeutic, coaching, and activist settings. His approach blends experiential learning with theoretical insights, creating supportive environments for participants to explore and reclaim their embodied experiences.

Beyond his clinical practice and education work, Roger is a musician and author. In 2024, he released a new album, Running With This Dream, and a new book, Somacultural Liberation. In 2022, he was chosen to be featured in the Levi’s Pride campaign and his message of Decolonizing Sexuality was seen around the world through Levi’s social media as well as an in-store campaign that ran in Target and Macy’s stores nationwide in the US.    

Dr. Roger Kuhn is a Poarch Creek Two-Spirit Indigiqueer somacultural sex therapist, sexuality educator, writer, activist, and musician. Roger’s work explores the concepts of decolonizing and unsettling sexuality and focuses on the way culture impacts and informs our bodily experiences. He is a community organizer of the Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirit powwow and a board member of the Two-Spirit & Native LGBTQ+ Center for Equity. His first book, Somacultural Liberation, is available in both paperback and audio. His music can be streamed on all digital platforms.
