Esalen News August 2022
Esalen is ever-evolving. We are six decades deep in the pursuit of human potential — growing alongside the counterculture and civil rights movements, and thus producing some colorful stories. Some are widely known (psychedelics and our hot springs), and some are lesser known, despite their societal impact (our citizen diplomacy work, our search for answers around superhumanism sustainability, and UFOs). To explore at Esalen is to experiment with new concepts and elevate older ones through our pioneering programming. We are an unfurling chrysalis, readyi to emerge with new stories and next chapters. Here’s to seeking answers and asking questions for another sixty years!
Do we have the whole “work to retire'' thing all wrong? Why aspire to retire if the working process sparks joy? Labor Day, our national holiday to rest and appreciate the achievements of American workers, is actually the perfect time to work with and on the human who matters most — you. Our Self-Guided Explorations are designed to function outside of the group structures of our workshops for a more freeform, flexible healing journey. Visiting teacher Liz Andolong, an embodiment and rest-as-healing practitioner, joins our open class roster as a teacher-in-residence for August and September.
In the sports and high-performance worlds, Esalen co-founder Michael Murphy is better known for writing mystical bestseller Golf in the Kingdom than for co-creating the leading center for human potential. This year, to mark the novel’s 50th, the bestseller will officially enter the pantheon of history’s finest works and be published as a Penguin Classic. As this Virgo approaches his 92nd turn around the sun in September, we want to take a moment to honor Michael’s contributing role in birthing two life-changing, iconic contributions for the world.
Vulnerability is a feeling men often labor to avoid. “We as a society need to unwind toxic programming around masculinity so we can fully show up.”
If a weekend or a week workshop isn’t enough, imagine if you could stay longer and press pause on your everyday life. Dedicate four weeks to explore yourself and start the journey of personal transformation in one of our Live Extended Education Programs. If you’re ready to take the LEEP, we’re accepting applications for these exciting programs.
