Esalen News December 2022
Looking back on 2022, so much has happened! Change, progress, growth, rebuilding, patience, resilience, and perseverance are words that come to mind. Collectively, Esalen’s leadership, staff, faculty, board of trustees, work-study students, volunteers, and guests have all worked hard to help pull our non-profit out of some very challenging realities. We proudly have survived fires, landslides, and a global pandemic.
As we reflect on this past year, we also celebrate six decades dedicated to human potential, personal and collective growth, and transformation and healing. The institute is much like those who arrive here to experience the land, workshops, baths, and all the other wonders found on these ancient, healing grounds. It is ever-changing, developing, blossoming, and unfurling into another version, a newer iteration, of itself. We continuously strive to be a more transcendent Esalen for this new year and new age.
As 2022 comes to an end and we prepare with open minds and open hearts for an amazing 2023, share with us, What are the ways you changed in 2022? What great possibilities do you hope and plan to pursue in this coming year?
Reflecting on 2022, we have so much to be grateful for — thanks to you! As we chart our next 60 years, we’re counting on your continued partnership and engagement to expand our offerings and realize our shared aims. We are grateful for our community’s perseverance through the challenges of recent years, and we know our resilience will continue to be tested in an ever-changing world. Still, we remain resolute in purpose.
You’ve probably never heard of the Esalen acronym CABinS. Though guests might simplify this crucial department to simple housekeeping, our dedicated and beloved Conscious Aware Beings in Service are the ones who “set the stage for transformation” here in Big Sur.
In the wake of America’s psychedelics prohibition and the dismantling of this nation’s War on Drugs, there are exciting, life-changing plant medicine conversations happening here at Esalen.
Join legendary psychedelics researcher and the father of the modern microdosing movement, James Fadiman, PhD, and microdosing educator and coach Adam Bramlage as they teach live from Esalen Institute in Big Sur. Together we will learn about the most current and best practices for microdosing psychedelics and plant medicine.
If a weekend or a week workshop isn’t enough, imagine if you could stay longer and press pause on your everyday life. Dedicate four weeks to explore yourself and start the journey of personal transformation in one of our Live Extended Education Programs. If you’re ready to take the LEEP, we’re accepting applications for these exciting programs.

The Esalen kitchen — the energy source that sustains our community — extended its reach during the pandemic by collaborating with The Big Share. Today, we continue to donate prepared meals and produce from our Farm & Garden to the greater Big Sur community: our friends and neighbors along Highway 1.
Chef Abi tried everything — from feeding relief workers and natural disaster survivors to crafting fine dining aboard mega yachts. But as the Chef de Cuisine at Esalen, she has found her missing ingredients for transformation and joy: "Everything is different now ... having the spaciousness to do inner personal work while you're working is pretty awesome."
The Tai Chi master, teacher, and best-selling author Chungliang "Al" Huang honors us with memories of his first years at Esalen alongside the institute’s most seminal legends: Michael Murphy, Dick Price, Alan Watts, Fritz Perls, Charlotte Selver, Joseph Campbell, and more. “Those were the early freedom days.”
