Esalen News October 2022
Esalen is a creative laboratory, an incubator of human potential for the “what’s next?” and “let’s see!” of life.
Over the last sixty years, transformative ideas and practices have been developed at Esalen by visiting faculty. Some have been absorbed into the culture, and some simply did not work, so they faded away into the ether.
With that, some old but newly-imagined programming is coming back to campus. First, our extended work/live opportunity is, well, extending even further to a six-month option (in addition to our existing three-month program). Applications will open soon.
This week, we are sharing our idyllic container with host and musical artist Maejor and MAPS’ policy and advocacy director Natalie Ginsburg for an episode of the Audible podcast Maejor Frequency. Stacia Butterfield, a protégée of Stan Grof, will lead a full-day experience on the very work Stan and Christina created while they were on-campus faculty back in the ’70s and ’80s.
Next month, the Esselen Tribe of Monterey County returns to teaching at Esalen after more than a decade. This very special unification begins with a beautiful collaboration between Medicine Woman Cari Herthel and 5Rhythms facilitator Douglas Drummond. The workshop will follow a land acknowledgment ceremony on November 13th that will honor the traditional stewards of the land and move toward ongoing healing and reconciliation between the Esalen Institute and the Esselen Tribe of Monterey County.
Finally, we are excited to share that Esalen’s second Digital Hybrid workshop in January will bring us back to our psychedelic past. The weekend workshop — led by the godfather of psychedelics and microdosing, Jim Fadiman, and Flow State Micro founder Adam Bramlage — will be a deep dive into microdosing and the contemporary and legal ways Western Medicine is now openly exploring its applications for depression, ADHD, and higher-quality performance for both the individual and collective. If you can’t join us on campus, a one-day digital experience will be available. Registration for the online program goes live at the end of the month.
Medicine woman and Esselen Tribe of Monterey County elder Cari Herthel shares some favorite plants that have inspired the re-emergence of her sensual and wild self. Cari’s November workshop will be a historic moment for the tribe and the Esalen Institute to collaborate and nourish a shared stewardship of this ancient and sacred land.
"America is the melting pot, and that might be true, but whether people accept this melting pot from a culinary perspective is actually very different." S. Rae Peoples talks to Chef Elle of America's Test Kitchen about this country’s legacy of culinary racism, the disenfranchisement of “authenticity,” and much more.
Esalen’s Farm & Garden was recently blessed with the kind of abundance that feels straight out of a Roald Dahl book! But rather than one giant peach, we have over 1,000 pounds of squash! Chef Abi cultivated a variety of delicious dishes — including this nourishing curried soup.
If a weekend or a week workshop isn’t enough, imagine if you could stay longer and press pause on your everyday life. Dedicate four weeks to explore yourself and start the journey of personal transformation in one of our Live Extended Education Programs. If you’re ready to take the LEEP, we’re accepting applications for these exciting programs.
