Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.
Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Have you ever dreamed of painting big—really big—but felt held back by hesitation, uncertainty, or intimidation?
This immersive course is your invitation to break free. To breathe deeper. To expand beyond the edges of your comfort zone. This is more than a painting class—it’s a dynamic, hands-on exploration of scale, movement, and the raw energy of expression. Guided by Lou, you'll dive into bold new techniques that invite play, risk-taking, and discovery. Through mixed media, you'll explore fresh approaches to composition, paint application, color dynamics, and surface interaction, pushing your work toward greater depth, vibrancy, and power
Painting large isn’t just about size—it’s about stepping into the full force of your creative voice. Some pieces demand space to breathe. Others invite loose, sweeping gestures that only a large canvas can hold. This course is designed to help you uncover why scale matters in your work and how to command it with confidence. You’ll be inspired by master artists who mastered scale—think Mark Rothko’s luminous depths, Franz Kline’s bold gestural strokes, Hilma af Klint’s mystical compositions, and Anselm Kiefer’s monumental storytelling. We’ll dissect what makes their work so impactful and translate that energy into your own creative process.
Expect a dynamic mix of techniques and materials, from acrylics and household emulsions to blackboard paints. You’ll work from printed references of your own art, experimenting with upscaling and storytelling on canvas. Plus, a one-hour creative immersion session will take you beyond the studio, using light, texture, music, and movement to awaken new artistic impulses.
This high-energy course is open to all levels—from beginners seeking their first artistic breakthrough to seasoned painters looking to amplify their expression. Whether you've been quietly yearning to go big or you’re ready to supercharge your creative practice, this is your moment. Come unleash, expand, and create. Let’s paint something huge.

Lou Rainbow encourages students to go deeper into their own practice by exploring their energy, showing alternative approaches, and stretching the parameters of their own mark-making, form, and composition using still life and nature as inspiration.
When I really get into the act of making art: the physical act of pulling ink through a silk screen, pouring slip-over clay, drawing with a newly sharpened pencil on a gnarly surface or hiding and revealing layers of wax and paint, the feeling I have is truly visceral, like a collection of things, tangible and intangible, that feed your soul. — Lou Rainbow
